I believe in the power of the human voice.
When the printing press arrived, it was claimed that people would be induced to curl up alone with books and forget all else – company, sharing, story-telling, everything. This did not happen.
When television arrived, it was claimed again that it would kill ‘the art of conversation’ because everybody would by hypnotised by the screen in the corner. This did not happen either.
A similar dire fate for the human race is now being forecast as result of the tidal impact of all the paraphernalia of the digital age. Children and adults alike will hunch themselves over their smart phones and computer games and simply not talk.
